One of the recently popular trends in the fashion and jewelry worlds is the use of vintage, antique and heirloom engagement rings. This is particularly true because of the recent trend of using less precious gemstones other than the diamond because of the royal engagement in the United Kingdom. Because of this, it has become popular for people to use rings that have been engraved with filigree designs.

Filigree engagement rings have elaborate, often intricate designs. The design can be something as simple as a heart or date or as complicated as the engravings found on a Celtic knot rings. The most elaborate designs, which usually feature more than one metal, often wind all the way around the ring and consist of two or three patterns that run into each other. These engagement rings, while beautiful, are also somewhat weak and unable to tolerate abuse because their structural integrity has been compromised for maximum beauty.

Filigree engagement rings are usually vintage rings and usually come from the Edwardian, Georgian and Victorian periods of the 19th and 20th Centuries, when such rings were most popular. In addition to having complicated designs in them, these rings also generally have gemstones – typically an expensive gemstone like diamonds and sapphires, set in them. These stones, while not to the degree of perfection that is possible today, are still nonetheless of very high quality.

One thing that people should keep in mind about filigree rings is that they are fragile and therefore must be maintained more often than regular rings. This means that these rings will need to be cleaned more frequently as they can pick up dirt more easily. When cleaning these rings, people should not use anything caustic or anything that would destroy the ring and should only use gentle brushes and a toothpick or needle to clean out the tiny crevices in the filigrees.
